Weaving and Origins of Area Rugs
Now a days, there are many kinds of area rugs that are available in the market and online shops that sells this floor decor are blooming like a mushroom on the net. If you will be asked, do you know how these originated and where it begins? For your information, area rugs are mainly classified into two types: Western and Asian. History said that Western Area Rugs originated in Spain during the 13th century. These were woven intricately by those from the Islamic nations and then imported. Not until in the 17th century that the country of France became the popular maker of area rugs in Europe. The cities of Aubusson and Savonnerie became the centers of making rugs in the western world back then. Later, England rose to become one of the famous makers of amazing area rugs. Soon, carpets were made by the use of machines but of course these were not as rarely beautiful as those which where handmade. These handmade rugs are known to be more durable and possesses unique designs. Machine-made carpets are known to be inexpensive compared to those which were hand woven.
Here are other significant events in the weaving of the rug / carpet:
- Egypt was believed to weave the area rugs during the ancient times. The said rugs were flat and were used in praying chambers and not for decoration.
- America produced area rugs in the 19th century that are reversible and made of wool (known as wool rugs)
Compared to the ancient rug to the current trend in carpets, you will see some significant difference. However, still the beginning of the rugs / carpets were all from our ancestors and we should be thankful about this. Without the area rugs in our home, what will it be like?
